But for you to understand what digital marketing is, you first need to know what marketing itself is. Believe me when I tell you this. This is a very broad topic. With that being said I will be trying my utmost best in making it as simple as ever and for that to happen you need to take heed of everything I will be ditching out in this very article.

When I am talking of marketing you should already know by now that I am all bout business. Marketing is one of the core and basic components of business management. This form of business management is the action or means of promoting or selling your services and products to the public.

Normally one can easily see this term as a new term and some fancy words. But digital marketing is more than that. It is a very important factor if you’re a business personnel. Thinking that this term is just a new and fancy term is fraud and wrong. It has actually been around for some time now. You might have been seeing it and have failed to realize what it is.

Digital marketing in the simplest of definitions is a means of marketing one’s products and services via electronic devices. It is no surprise that electronic devices have been around for some time now. Now you see the reason I said digital marketing has been around for quite some time now, right? I will be mentioning in this article the types of digital marketing we have and how they are propagated and why digital marketing matters or should I say the benefits of digital marketing.

You already know what digital marketing is as a form of marketing that involves the use of electronic devices. Now, do you know why it matters to marketers? I bet you do not. Fortunately for you, I know why digital marketing matters, and I am going to be telling you why it matters.

There was a time where billboards ruled the advertising and marketing industry. But do you know that the time of billboards is long gone now? Normally when driving, one can easily get attracted to billboards by the road. But with the recent developments in technology, the effects these billboards and newspapers used to have on us has rescinded greatly.

Now, I don’t know if you have noticed, but instead of looking out the windows of our cars, we now stare at our cell or mobile devices. This means that passengers no longer look at the roads but instead look at their mobile devices. Now if the people who these adverts are meant for do not look at them and notice them, then, who will look at them? A recent study now shows that Americans now spend 11+ hours daily on electronic devices. This is one of the reasons why digital marketing matters.

Types of Digital Marketing

Digital marketing does not just happen on its own. There are however two types of digital marketing. These are the two ways through which digital marketing is propagated. Below are the two types of digital marketing;

  • Online digital marketing.
  • Offline digital marketing.

If you are a marketer and you are marketing your products or services digitally then it is possible that you are practicing either of these two types of advertising.

Digital online marketing is that type of marketing that is done solely on the internet. It is that one that is done over the internet hence the name online. Offline marketing on the other hand deals without the internet but other forms of electronic devices like the radio, television, and phone. There are other categories under the online digital marketing and they are as follows;

  • Search engine optimization (SEO).
  • Search engine marketing (SEM).
  • Content marketing.
  • Social media marketing (SMM).
  • Pay-per-click marketing (PPC).
  • Affiliate marketing.
  • Email marketing.

These are the seven categories of the online form of digital marketing. There are four categories through which offline marketing is propagated and they are as follows;

  • Enhanced offline marketing.
  • Radio marketing.
  • Phone marketing and,
  • Television marketing.
