Google: A Brief History of Google, Its Products And Services


You might have probably heard of the word before or you might have even made use of the Google platform or either one of its services or products. But the main question here is do you know what it really is? Do you know what Google is all about?



The Google platform is one, a huge part of the world’s population with access to the internet has made use of. Personally, I think that everyone with access to the internet has made use of Google. This is a fact that we all have to agree with. Now if you have no knowledge of the Google platform, then this article is for you. It is all you need to know about Google.

A Brief History of Google

Google is a multinational technology company based in America. This company specializes mostly in internet-related products and services. Some of the company’s main forms of business include online advertising, cloud computing, software, hardware, and online advertising technologies. This platform is also considered to be one of the big four companies in the world including Amazon, Facebook, and apple.

The platform was founded in 1998 by Sergey brin and Larry page. They were both Ph.D. students at Stanford University California. On August 19, 2004, an initial public offering took place leading to the movement of Google to its headquarters in Mountain View California. This platform was nicknamed the Googleplex. In August 2005 something interesting happened to Google. The company was rebranded as a conglomerate called alphabet Inc. with Google being its leading subsidiary.

Larry Page was made the CEO of ‘alphabet’, while Sundar Pichai was appointed to replace Larry Page as the CEO of Google. Ever since the company was incorporated the company has developed and grown tremendously leading in the acquisition of products and partnerships. These products and acquisitions will be talked about over the course of this article.

Google Services

Much of the development and growth of the Google Company and platform is due to the products and services it offers. For better explanation and understanding I will be writing on some of the services and products of the Google platform;

Google Search

The Google search can also be referred to as Google web search or simply Google. This Google service is a web search engine that is developed by Google. It is the most used web search engine across all platforms on the internet. The platform handles more than 3.5 billion searches per day. Search results on the platform are based on a priority rank system called PageRank. Its closest competitors are Baidu,,,, Yandex,, yahoo, Bing, and duckduckgo.

Google Docs, Google Slides, and Google Sheets

These services offered by Google are designed for work and creativity. “Google docs” is a word processor platform. It is free web-based software offered by Google. It is available as a mobile application and web app. This application or service lets users create and edit files online at the same time collaborating with other users.

“Google Sheets” is more in line with Google docs. They are both used for editing. It is used for creating and editing spreadsheets. The Google spreadsheets also provide similar services as the Google docs and Google slides platforms. They are all part of the Google drive feature of Google.

Google Email

This is an email service provided by Google. It was first released on April 1st, 2004, and ended its testing phase on July 7th, 2009. During the first stages of its launch it had an internal memory of 1 gigabyte and today it now has 15-gigabyte storage. Users can send files of up to 25 megabytes in size including attachments and can also receive emails up to 50 megabytes in size.

Google Calendar

Google Calendar is a scheduling and time management feature of Google. The feature has always been helpful to users over the years since its inception. This very feature lets users create and edit events. Users can also set up reminders for these events so as not to miss out on important events. This service can be customized by users to suit them in ways they prefer.

Google Drive

This is a file storage and synchronization service developed by Google of course. This feature allows users to store files on its platform. It also lets users share files across platforms and devices. Goggle Drive offers 15 gigabytes of free storage via Google one. This very same platform also offers 100, 200 gigabytes, 2, 10, 20, and 30 terabytes of storage through optional paid plans. The platform can also be customized by users.

Google Halo, Duo, and Hangouts

This is the instant messaging and video chat platform by Google. It works in a similar fashion as most messaging and video platforms you know of just that it is one of the best out there.

Google Translate

This is a multilingual translation machine developed by Google. It helps translate texts from one language to another preferred language. This platform can be accessed via the web interface and via mobile apps. It was launched in April 2006. The feature does not translate languages directly. Rather it first translates texts to English then later to the preferred and targeted language.

Google Maps, Waze, Google Earth, Street View

These are mapping and navigation tools developed by Google. They render a 3D representation of earth-based solely and primarily on satellite imagery.

These are some of the services and products of Google. Other services include YouTube, Google keep, Google photos, Google Chrome, and Chrome OS. Some hardware products produced by Google include the Google Pixel smartphone, Google Home smart speaker, Google Wi-Fi mesh wireless router, Google daydream virtual reality headset, Google fi, Google station, and Google fiber.
