Before we go further let’s understand what PayPal is all about.

What is PayPal?

PayPal stands as the world’s most populous and biggest online payment processing service. This is one of the safest and simplest medium of paying for anything bought or sold online. Signing up and using the PayPal service is easy as well as free.

Sending and Receiving Money on PayPal

Users of Paypal are given two ways of sending and receiving money online. The Friends and Family payment methods (F&F) or the Goods and Services (G&S) payment method. The Friends and Family mode of payment is used when users are sending money to their friends and family. While the Goods and Services mode of payment is designed to be used when users are buying, selling, or trading online.

Now when you use the Goods and Services mode of payment, as a buyer or seller, you are protected from scams.

What is Friends and Family (F&F)?

The F&F payment method is one set up by PayPal to enable PayPal users to make payments. However, it is only when they are sending payment to a friend or a family member. Thus users who use the friends and family payment mode to buy and sell rather than use it to send money to friends and family, have no guarantee of getting their products or their money back in the event of any issue. During the PayPal account creation process, you will be asked to choose. You would choose between one of the two account types which are either Business or Personal. If you choose a personal account, you will have both the features of F&F and G&S on your account. With this, you can send PayPal funds to friends and family or goods and services.

What is PayPal Goods and Services G&S?

This is the mode of payment you would be using if you choose business when you created your PayPal account. What this means is that your account cannot send funds as Family and Friends.

  • You get the PayPal buyer’s protection of a full refund if the case is resolved in your favor, and you also get a refund of the shipping fee you paid.

How to know if the PayPal Fund is F&F or G&S

Now you may be confused when you receive money into your account not knowing whether it was sent as F&F or G&S. So I will be showing you three ways with which you can determine if a payment is an F&F or G&S.

Check the Details

After receiving payment, check the details. If the transaction fee shows $0.00, what this implies is that it was a gift (i.e.) F&F fund. Note that this may not always be accurate because when people send mass payments, there’s usually no fee. Click on the link that reads “Issue a refund”. If the payment was a gift, beneath “Refund amount”, you will see these words, “Partial refunds are not available for personal payments or for transactions marked as pending). If you see this, it means the payment is definitely a gift. But if it says you can make a refund then it’s not an F&F fund.

The second way of distinguishing between F&F and G&S is via PayPal charges. If you happen to receive payment and get charged in the process, it means it is a G&S fund. If on the other hand, your payment did not incur any charge, then it’s definitely an F&F fund. Note that, with Family and Friends funds, the sender is the party that will be charged, while the receiver goes cost-free.

Another way of identifying a payment as an F&F and G&S is via the billing address. F&F funds do not include a billing address. Thus if you see a billing address, it means it was sent as Goods and Services.

Now you have all the information you need to differentiate between Friends and Family and Goods and Services. You can now start using the service to your own benefit.
